The laboratory currently employs ten members of staff.  It has two basic functions:

1.  In-house Quality Control
2.  Customer Service

The Quality Control function covers analysis of our raw materials and finished premixes. This includes many mineral assays (base metals, transition metals and heavy metals) which are determined via the Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) technique; vitamin analyses determined via High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC); and enzyme analyses, phytase determined by vanadomolybdate colorimetry, NSP enzymes by a manual viscometric method.

The Customer Service function covers the analysis of compound feeds, associated raw materials, forage of all types and practically any other feed for animals. In 2008 we analysed 23,400 forages, being mainly grass silage and maize silage but also fresh grass, wholecrops, hay, haylage, total mixed rations and other forage types. We also undertook over 1500 forage mineral profiles.

Our grass silage, maize silage, and fresh grass is analysed using the latest scanning Near Infra-Red (NIR) technology. We are members of the Forage Analysis Assurance (F.A.A.) group. The calibrations are routinely monitored against in-house 'wet' chemistry techniques and we participate in the ring tests and quality assurance systems as members of the F.A.A.

Annually, we analyse 22,000 finished feeds/raw materials for the standard parameters, oil (process A & B), crude protein, crude fibre, ash, moisture, salt and mineral content. Most of these samples are analysed using traditional 'wet' chemistry techniques. Increasingly, we undertake customer raw material and feed analysis by NIR, which offers cost effective, rapid results. The NIR calibrations are monitored and updated according to our own 'wet' chemistry results.

To ensure ultimate customer confidence we work to the the highest industry standards and participate in the nationally organised ring tests of FAPAS and NACS.

A price list that details the suites of analysis is available on application. Other assays are also available on request.

The analysis of fats, amino acids, aflatoxins, medicinal additives and microbiological tests such as salmonella are contracted out to certified contract service laboratories with relevant expertise.
